As we embark on our transformative journey to shape future leaders through the Southern Africa Public Leadership Programme, we have carefully selected our seminar destinations to immerse Fellows in regions of political and historical significance. Each location serves as a living classroom, rich with lessons in governance, leadership, and the complexities of public service across Southern Africa. Here's a brief overview of each destination and its relevance to our programme:
Seminar 1: Johannesburg, South Africa | 24-27 January 2025
Johannesburg, often referred to as the economic hub of South Africa, is steeped in a history of struggle and triumph. As the birthplace of many anti-apartheid movements and the heart of political activism, it is a fitting location to kick off the programme. The city houses iconic sites like Constitution Hill, a former prison and military fort that now symbolises the nation’s transition to democracy. Johannesburg’s political legacy provides a solid foundation for future leaders to reflect on South Africa’s ongoing journey towards justice and equality.
Seminar 2: Cape Town / Johannesburg, South Africa (TBC) | 21-24 February 2025
Cape Town is home to South Africa’s Parliament, where key legislative decisions are made. This coastal city has witnessed landmark moments, such as Nelson Mandela’s historic speech from the steps of City Hall after his release from prison in 1990. Cape Town's significance in shaping national policy and its proximity to Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, makes it an inspiring venue for understanding the resilience of leadership. If hosted in Johannesburg, this session will continue to build on the vibrant political activism at the heart of the country's capital.
Seminar 3: Pretoria / Johannesburg, South Africa (TBC) | 21-24 March 2025
Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa, is home to the Union Buildings, the official seat of the South African government and the president’s office. The Union Buildings were the site of Mandela's inauguration as South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994. This city represents a pivotal moment in the country’s transition to democracy, and seminar participants will gain firsthand insights into the inner workings of the nation’s executive leadership. Should this seminar be held in Johannesburg, participants will again engage with the city’s wealth of political heritage.
Seminar 4: Johannesburg, South Africa | 25-28 April 2025
Returning to Johannesburg provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the city’s modern political landscape. Fellows will explore its role in shaping contemporary policies that address inequality, urbanization, and economic development. The bustling metropolis is also home to South Africa’s Constitutional Court, a beacon of justice for the country and a model of constitutional democracy in Africa. Participants will leave with a more profound understanding of how Johannesburg continues to drive political discourse and reform.
Seminar 5: Johannesburg, South Africa | 23-26 May 2025
This seminar will further immerse Fellows in Johannesburg’s dynamic political environment. As one of Africa’s most vibrant cities, Johannesburg is not only significant in South African politics but also in the region’s broader political economy. The city’s role in international diplomacy, hosting major political summits and African Union meetings, makes it a vital space for understanding South Africa’s leadership on the continent.
Seminar 6: Windhoek, Namibia | 20-23 June 2025
Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, offers a unique perspective on Southern African political leadership. Namibia gained independence in 1990 after a prolonged struggle against colonial rule, and Windhoek now stands as a symbol of liberation and nation-building. Namibia’s relatively young democracy, with a strong emphasis on peace and stability, provides Fellows with critical insights into governance in post-colonial African states. The city’s historic Tintenpalast (Ink Palace), home to the Namibian Parliament, is a landmark of political significance where discussions on governance in a regional context will come to life.
Seminar 7: Johannesburg, South Africa | 25-28 July 2025
The final seminar, back in Johannesburg, brings the programme full circle. Fellows will consolidate their learning from across Southern Africa while reflecting on the role Johannesburg continues to play in advancing democratic governance, social justice, and economic transformation. This city, a microcosm of South Africa’s diversity and complexity, will inspire future leaders to enact positive change in their respective regions and beyond.
Each of these locations has been thoughtfully chosen for its deep-rooted political relevance and historical significance, offering rich learning experiences to our Fellows. Together, these destinations not only represent key milestones in the region's journey towards democracy but also provide the ideal environment for developing the next generation of public leaders in Southern Africa.
