Connecting Africa's brightest through digital

Digital platforms have the power to bridge gaps between political and civic leaders, youth, and women in politics across Africa and beyond. By building communication and collaboration, these tools empower marginalised voices and facilitate engagement in the political process. As a result, they create opportunities for diverse perspectives to shape policies and drive social change, ultimately strengthening democracy and governance.

Futurelect believes that civic education is essential for empowering voters
Futurelect Alumni share their journeys following Graduation

Futurelect believes civic education plays a pivotal role in combating ‘information-shedding’ by equipping citizens with knowledge and skills to engage meaningfully in the democratic process. South Africa goes to the polls on 29 May amid unique challenges in ensuring access to quality civic education, including socioeconomic disparities and historical legacies. However, there are also opportunities for innovative approaches to address these gaps and foster a more informed and engaged citizenry. Naledi Moleo speaks to Futurelect CEO Lindiwe Mazibuko.

'There's enthusiasm about this election that there's never been before' - Lindiwe Mazibuko
Talk To Me Direct: Lindiwe Mazibuko

Lindiwe Mazibuko is the Founder and CEO of Futurelect, and NPC which aims to revive young people’s trust in politics, by supporting them to participate in the democratic processes. With a presence through Africa, its goal is to empower youthful electorates on the continent and to encourage them to hold elected leadership to account via the elections.

What is it like to be South Africa’s first-ever Black, young, female Leader of the Opposition in Parliament? Lindiwe Mazibuko recounts her experiences. In episode 7, Lindiwe talks about the double-edged sword that is digital technology and urges African voters to demand more from their elected representatives. She also talks about her love for Beyonce’s music! After her term, and seeing that no other young, black politicians had succeeded her in that role, Lindiwe Mazibuko turned her attention to raising the next generation of African ethical leaders. At Futurelect and at Apolitical Academy, both of which she co-founded, she prepares Africa’s young people for careers in government or elected office.

Webinar: Making Governance an Inclusive Club

South Africa transitioned to democracy in the 1990s with a visionary constitution, but the promises of that constitution are largely unfulfilled to this day. Public leader Lindiwe Mazibuko explores how poor leadership failed to deliver a better life for the country's citizens — and shares her mission to cultivate a new generation of ethical leaders who can revitalize democracy in South Africa and beyond.

Luminate and its partners are working to break down the barriers that actively excluded women and young people from fully participating during the 2023 elections in Kenya and Nigeria. Moderated by Luminate's Toyin Akinniyi, this webinar explored what needs to be done to further support political engagement and active citizenship among women and youth in Africa.
