Futurelect Annual Report 2024: A Year of Impact, Growth & Bold New Milestones.

2024 was a defining year for Futurelect. A year where our programmes grew stronger, our alumni broke new ground, and our civic education work reached millions across the continent.

This Annual Report brings together the big moments, data, stories, and lessons that shaped our work over the past year. It captures not just what we did, but the leadership journeys we supported, the systems we strengthened, and the vision we continue to build for Africa’s democratic future.

What You will Find Inside the Report:

A Powerful Year of Leadership
  • Over 137 programme graduates, with 70% women.

  • 50% of our alumni now serving in public office, from council seats to parliament.

  • 16 alumni contested elections in 2024, and several secured seats, including Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster and Malebo Kobe in South Africa’s National Assembly.

Growing Where It Counts

We significantly deepened our regional work:

  • In East Africa, we hosted seven intensive seminar weekends, formed a new local advisory council, and are building a strong pipeline of leaders ready to run for office.

  • In Southern Africa, interest exploded, we received a record 290 applications for our flagship program, with a new cohort starting in early 2025.

  • Our Women in Public Office initiative is in full swing, actively preparing women leaders for South Africa’s pivotal 2026 local government elections.

Civic Education Broke the Mold

Our digital-first approach to civic education hit its stride. Our Learning App gained over 84,000 new users in 2024. By taking our courses to platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Spotify, we reached over 3 million South Africans. The best feedback? 68% of users we surveyed said our content directly motivated them to vote.

Our First-Ever Alumni Summit: A Game Changer

In March, we gathered our alumni network with key thinkers and decision-makers for our inaugural Summit. The conversations were electric, tackling everything from ethical leadership and youth participation to the challenges of AI and misinformation. This event wasn’t just a conference; it cemented the foundation of a powerful, active alumni community.

Building Trust and Influence

Futurelect’s voice found a trusted place in the public square. We were featured on major outlets like Newzroom Afrika, eNCA, 702, and CapeTalk, and hosted critical webinars and youth dialogues. A major institutional milestone was earning accreditation from South Africa’s IEC to formally observe the 2024 national elections.

Strong Financial Stewardship

With total funding of R25.6 million, we directed 67% of every Rand straight into our programs. For the 7th year running, we received a clean audit a non-negotiable standard that reflects our commitment to radical transparency and excellent governance.

2024 underscored a powerful truth: change happens when young leaders, women in office, funders, and engaged citizens, lock arms around a shared goal. That goal is an Africa where ethical leadership is the norm, not the exception.
