Preparing for 2026: Why Civic Knowledge Matters Now

South Africa's next Local Government Elections are approaching, and the Electoral Commission has begun the process. The voter registration weekend has been confirmed for 20 and 21 June 2026. Ward delimitation is underway. Over 500 political parties are registered. The wheels of democracy are turning.

At Futurelect, we believe readiness is essential to building a strong democracy. A great deal of careful work goes into delivering a free and fair election, and it is just as important for citizens to arrive prepared with the knowledge and confidence to participate fully.

The progress being made across the country reflects a system working with purpose. Since November 2025, over 260,000 new voter registrations have been recorded, with 132,092 completed through the online self-service portal alone. The IEC has reached more than 3.43 million people through over 30,000 community engagements held across all nine provinces. Five hundred and thirty Municipal Outreach Coordinators have been deployed to bring civic education directly into communities. A Training-of-Trainers programme is equipping registration staff to serve voters consistently and professionally at every station across the country.

Strengthening civic participation requires ongoing effort. But working, deliberately, systematically, and at scale will result in citizens who participate with knowledge and confidence.

Administrative readiness is only one part of the process. First-time voters also need to understand why local government and ward councillors matter to their daily lives. For example, students studying in Johannesburg but living in Limpopo must understand why registering in the correct ward is important. That is the work Futurelect has been doing since 2018.

Our Futurelect Learning App reached over 84,000 new users in 2024 alone. Ahead of the May 2024 general elections, our digital marketing campaign reached 2 million people through social media. In a survey of over 400 app users, 68 per cent said our civics content helped them better understand the importance of participating in elections. Our videos are available on YouTube, TikTok, Spotify, and Instagram Reels because civic education must meet young people where they are, not where institutions assume they are.

We see our work as sitting alongside the IEC's efforts. The Commission helps people understand how to participate. We help people understand how local government works and how citizens can participate in democratic processes. Together, these two things make for a more informed, more engaged electorate.

Local government elections deserve particular attention. They may not generate the same headlines as a general election, but their impact is felt every single day. Ward councillors are the elected representatives closest to the communities they serve. They influence whether roads are maintained, whether water services function, and whether municipal complaints receive a response. The 2026/27 Local Government Elections are not abstract. They are immediate, local, and personal.
